Quincy snow is real snow. At 3,400 feet in the northern Sierra Nevada, we get accumulation that buries driveways, blocks walkways, and stacks up on entry steps. The single most useful thing you can do is know when to call and how to plan the season - before the first storm hits, not during it.
The short answer: call for snow removal in Quincy as soon as 4+ inches accumulates, or before the next storm if forecasters are calling for back-to-back days. Most Quincy residents on snow service are on a recurring contract from November through April so they're not chasing the schedule storm-by-storm.
When Quincy snow season starts
Snow in Quincy usually starts in mid-to-late November. Some years it holds off until December; some years a freak October storm catches everyone unprepared. The reliable window is November through April, with the heaviest accumulation in January and February. March can throw heavy wet snow that's worse than the lighter winter storms - and April surprise storms are not rare.
Meadow Valley sits a touch higher in elevation than Quincy proper. If you're out toward Meadow Valley or further out along Bucks Lake Road, expect the season to start earlier and end later, with deeper accumulations per storm. We service both areas on the same schedule, but Meadow Valley properties typically need more frequent visits.
How much snow per storm typically
A typical Quincy storm drops anywhere from 2 to 12 inches. The 2-to-4-inch storms you can usually shovel yourself if you're inclined and you have the time. Above 4 inches is where most homeowners decide to call for help - partly because the volume gets exhausting fast, partly because back-to-back 4-inch storms compound into a 12-inch problem if the first one isn't cleared.
Heavy years bring weeks where 8-to-15-inch storms stack on top of each other with no melt between. That's when recurring snow customers are glad they signed up early - the on-call list gets long and we book it in the order people committed for the season.
Recurring vs on-call snow service
Two main ways people book snow removal with us:
Recurring contracts are the standard for anyone who relies on their driveway. You sign up at the start of the season, we come out automatically when storms hit a threshold you set (usually 4 inches), and pricing is locked for the whole winter. You're in our rotation - no calling, no waiting, no negotiating prices in the middle of a snowstorm.
On-call is for one-off storms or for people who can usually handle their own snow but want backup for the bigger ones. We do quote and schedule these, but availability depends on what else is on the board. After a major storm, on-call gets fit in around the recurring contracts.
Recurring is the better deal in real winters - both in pricing and in peace of mind. On-call works fine for milder winters or for properties where access isn't critical.
What to clear first
When we hit a property after a storm, the priority order is usually:
- Entry path from the most-used door to the car - usually the side or back door
- Steps and stoops where ice can form fast on the cleared surface
- Driveway clear-through so you can actually get out
- Walkway from the driveway to the front entry
- Any auxiliary paths to a shed, mailbox, garage side door, etc.
For commercial properties or rentals, the priority shifts to customer-facing entries and parking. We'll walk it with you the first visit so we know your property's actual access pattern.
Scheduling tips before the season
A few things that make the season easier for everyone:
- Sign up early. Slots fill in October. By the time the first storm hits in November, we're at capacity for new recurring customers.
- Mark your driveway edges. Tall reflective stakes at the corners of the driveway and along the path edges help us clear cleanly without scraping landscaping or hitting unseen obstacles under the snow.
- Move vehicles before storms. A vehicle in the driveway means we work around it; a vehicle gone means we clear the whole driveway in one pass.
- Have a salt/ice melt plan. Even after we clear, refreeze can re-ice everything overnight. Ice melt on the path and step edges helps. We can apply it as part of the visit on request.
After winter, the snowpack thaws and a different problem starts - spring cleanup - debris, sander gravel, snow-mold patches on lawns. We handle that too.
